The following survey is the actual instrument given to CSU students in 1994. In the computer data set variable names and labels have been abbreviated to meet the requirements of the SPSS program

•Some changes were made in the questions and wording in 1994

•The sample was chosen to be representative of the CSU in the following manner:

(1) Schools representing north, south, coastal and valley areas were chosen. These included Humboldt State University, San Francisco State University, California State University Fresno, California Polytechnic University San Luis Obispo, San Diego State University

(2) Within those schools general education classes which would be composed of the the widest range of students were chosen:

50% were lower division general education classes

50% upper division general education classes

In 1987 Bruce Haston a professor at Humboldt State University performed a survey of CSU students to find out their concerns, opinions and life styles. His goal was to make these data available to students and classes studying student concerns. The following questions were asked of a sample of students at representative California State University campuses in 1987.

Not suprisingly, students and issues have changed since then. We are asking you to read the questions and tell us your position. At the end we have added some new questions that get us information Bruce missed or information on new issues that have appeared since 1987. The dataset for 1987 is available at your University. As soon as these data are collected and formatted for analysis they will also be available for all C.S.U. students. Thank you for helping us with this project.

Instructions: Please turn the green GENERAL PURPOSE -NCS- ANSWER SHEET to side 1.

•We want to guarantee your answers will be confidential so please do not place your name or identification number on the answer sheet.

•Turn to the next page of this survey and with a pencil carefully fill in the circle on the answer sheet for the number that corresponds to your choice -- we do not use "0"

Please do not mark on this survey; to save money we are using the survey in several classes.
