Teaching Resources Depository: Suggestion Box

© SSRIC; Last Modified 27 August 1998

Jim, Nan and Tommy appreciate your suggestions!!!!!

To all contributors: when you upload something, send it to your original folder, then LET US KNOW USING THIS SUGGESTION BOX. If you want to revise something FOR A MODULE that you have uploaded previously, DOWNLOAD it from the folder with your identifier on it (CENS, CJQL, COWI, MACR, REPR, SCCS, SISS, etc.) and upload it back to the same folder when you are done.

Or, put it back in your original folder AND LET US KNOW RIGHT AWAY. If you modify the files in the major site folders (CENS, CJQL, COWI, MACR, REPR, SCCS, SISS, etc.)it is your responsibility to keep the same names and structure for your files to ensure that ther web links continue to work.

It sounds like you had a great workshop!

Since I have no life, as you pointed out, I will do the following:

  1. Create a download page for (a) files anyone can have and (b) links to SSDBA for restricted files [Jim - just send me the paths for each]
  2. Start working on links from modules and exercises to the relevant book chapters
  3. Add the mailto: address for the listserv on the main page

I think one big response page would be a good idea: add URLs, add glossary items + definitions, make suggestions, ask questions, report problems. If you do the back end, I'll do the front. Since nothing is automatic, we will still need to cut and paste, do the html, etc. but at least everything would be in one place.

For now, an email + attachment to me ought to work ok for people who want to submit something.

The most intriguing idea is the "More specification for modules and exercises topic, pedagogy goal, time estimated for task" idea. We can ask each author to respond to this one, but I would also make a point of asking users for THEIR experience here, particularly if they use these things in ways that are new for them -- and for us.

I have two criminal justice datasets; one on sentence lengths in sacramento felony court 1988 and 1994; and one on personnel issues among rape crisis workers (job satisfaction and burnout). I would like to elaborate these into either an exercise or two or as a contribution to a module. how shall i start?smarquez@csuhayward.edu

Stephanie (and other contributors):

Use our modules/exercises as guides for length, content, use of SPSS, etc.

We will soon have a page with instructions for uploading files to the site. Basically, YOU will provide materials in the form of *.doc (Word 6) or *.txt files, plus any *.gif, *.jpg, or *.por (SPSS portable) files. WE will create the HTML versions, downloadable zipped or stuffed files, and links to all the relevant site pages.

It will be great to have some Crim Justice materials!!

Nan, I hope to have my modules on the anthropology data set done by the end of August and send you a completed copy. I will keep you informed. I checked what you presently have on the home page, based on what I give Jim in the Spring, and I noticed that most of the tables are not aligned properly. Eventually I will send you a complete document, since I am also making some revisions to what is now on the home page, and hopefully that version can replace what is presently available.

all the CENS files now uploaded, validated, etc. Some tables could use better formatting, but it will be a week or so before I can get to it.

All:

Check the Exercise and Module main pages -- the descriptions were quickly done and would be improved by your editing. Just send me email or use this suggestion box.

ALL--We have had a number of requests for time estimates on modules and exercises. If any of you have estimates let Nan and I know through this page and we can add to exercise and module description page.

Nan, I'm back working--on my comp literacy page at present. Any specific needs such as creating stuffed or zipped files that you can think of?

I need to create some screen shots on the PC--what screen set up set up did you use for the SPSS text--they look great!

Jim: the codebooks and exercises previously zipped or stuffed have been changed as far as titles, background jpg, and navbars, so you might want to re-do them in your spare time... For the screen captures, I just used shift- or alt-PrintScreen to save the images to a Word doc file. Then I did "save-as" *htm, and it magically created a bunch of *gif files, some of which I then cropped using Photo Shop. I have submitted our site to Yahoo, W3, Infoseek, Alta Vista, Webcrawler, Galaxy, and Internic Scout.

Jim: I'm still getting an error message (timing out) on the main page and the first pages of each section (using IE).

Also, FTP_inst.htx, browser1.htx, and download.htx still have the "include" statement. Do you want me to change these?

I think I have nearly everything headed, footed, and validated. I will be checking every page today and tomorrow, because I want us to be up and running with no major changes by Sept. 1!!

When do you think we'll have the Search function working for the Glossary page? Give me a ballpark date and I'll put it on the page.

Also, what is the URL for the TRUS exercise that will have to go on the SSDBA site because it uses recent Field data?

and when I try for this page, I get the "unable to connect, etc, connection with server reset" although I obviously get in anyway -- but the message always comes up.

To all,

We have fixed the timeout problem associated with MS Internet Explorer and our Netscape Enterprise Web Server. However, this created another problem with the server, namely, the use of the tilde (~) in the CGI application path parameter. We have configured a work-around for that which involves not using the tilde. This means that your bookmarks, if any, that point to this page will need to be updated.

Nan or JimI probably will have to fix a few things at some point, but fornow it would be helpful to re-establish links to the Arcviewtutorial. (censappm). Also the suggestion icon at the bottomof the module page gets a "not found" response.

It looks like these definitions in Gerber's glossary are reversed: adjusted R square: A goodness of fit measurement; measures the percent of the dependent variable’s variation that is explained by movement of the independent variable in a linear regression. Adjusted R square is similar to R square but is adjusted for the number of independent variables.

REPR now has link to Codebook in T of C; also links on each page to codebook. Link to HOME was already there, so I'm not sure what your message above refers to exactly.

NESD authors switched.
