Hardware Standards

One of the many challenges in supporting the use of computers and information
technology in a university environment is standardizing, to the degree possible,
the kinds of hardware and software that people use on their desktops and in offices.
While this policy realizes that some individuals/departments will have needs that
are not resolved by the recommended standards, it is important to acknowledge that
adhering to standards will ultimately result in better service and faster resolution
of problems for everyone. Computing in a network environment is complex; hardware
and software that work fine in a non-networked or home environment may not work in
a network environment. Saving a few dollars on an off-brand PC or personal printer
will ultimately cost far more in staff support and in additional purchases that may
be needed to solve problems.
The goal of this document is not to impose expensive standards unilaterally, but
rather to increase campus understanding of the problems and issues and reach a consensus
on the policy and standards. Having standards reduces the number of variables that
come into play while trouble shooting problems, which will result in better service
for information technology users. This policy and the recommended standards will
be kept current and available via a web page. Users will be able to select products
and make purchasing decisions simply be referring to the recommended standards. Information
Resources (IR) will guarantee that products purchased from the recommended standards
will work on the campus's networked environment. While IR will still be committed
to making non-recommended equipment and software work, it must be recognized that
these situations will take a lower priority and may involve additional expense to
the user.
Apple
The following Apple computers are the basic standard required for new purchases
on our campus. All models will require a minimum of 2GB of physical RAM in anticipation
of future applications.
