Connecting to CSUB Resources from Home

Internet Service Providers

Campus and Stiern Library resources that can be accessed from a web browser are available to students from home. Some resources require an Runner Card (CSUB student ID) as well as special additions to your web browser (see below). Software programs found in the labs, such as Microsoft Office, Minitab, SPSS, etc., cannot be accessed from home. The campus does not offer Internet access to students--you will need a local or regional Internet Service Provider to facilitate this connection. Please note that some ISP's (such as AOL) use non-standard software, and you may have problems accessing campus resources.

Supported Web Browsers

The campus supported web browser is Netcape Navigator or Communicator. You can download Netscape's browser even if you use an ISP which provides another browser (such as AOL), or if you are running Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Communicator for Windows 3.x, Windows 95/98/NT, Macintosh PPC

Connecting with Serial Communications

This method requires VT100 terminal emulation software such as Kermit, Versaterm, or Procomm to connect to the Academic Vax through campus modems. This type of access is text based only, and does not support graphics. For a menu of available resources, set your modem software to call 664-2301. The menu includes choices for the Academic Vax, Administration Server, Banner2000, Office Automation, Library Online Catalog, and Computer Science Servers.

The "Student Guide to Information Resources" in the bookstore provides information on connecting serially, or click here for specific instructions on serial communications using Kermit for IBM computers.
